The Past Has Already Gone

....yet why some of us still contemplating about it?

When some of us got back something that related to the past, something that remind us of the moment that we're so happy, should we really hang onto it?

If everything has changed since then, why bother to hang onto it?

We can't just got back to something in the past just because it's good, it makes you comfortable,... it's familiar...

"we were never friends..."

though I have to admit I never see this could happen...yet it is happening...

For that, all I could say... that I wish all the happiness in the world for you and her.

I hope you and him will stay together forever... from here to the hereafter...

Final Week before Revision Period

For this week, I'm going to finish up all the unfinished tasks and assignment for my Graphic Communication subject, compiled them and present them in a port folio form. That's one.

Two, I'm going to submit my term paper on Tadao Ando for my Intro. to Built Environment subject. Pray hard I'll get 20% solid.

and three, I'm going to submit the maths assignment. Hopefully I'll get the 10% and that'll adds up to my 36% carry marks. I'm going to need at least 39% out of 45% to get a solid A.

Then, I can finally focus on my preparation for final exams.

IBE Assignment

As for today, I decided to work on my Intro. to Built Environment term paper where we're required to choose any international prominent architect (still practicing) and discuss his works, contribution in the field of architecture, experience and educational background. We can also include critic of his works in the literature if we want to.

It's a 10 to 15 pages of course including photos and this is to be submitted on next Wednesday. 

Me? I chose Tadao Ando. 

Well, I love Frank Lloyd Wright (who doesn't?) and since Tadao Ando is in fact influenced by his works, and of course Le Corbusier's, Louis Kahn's, and Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe's works too and therefore, I chose him. 

...yeah, to those who know me definitely will say it's because he's Japanese and he even built his firm in Osaka (Tadao Ando Architect and Associates) instead of Tokyo where people believe that it's better to start in the most populated city in the world. No my friends, it's not because of that. 

Anyway, I'm going to gather some information from the Internet and going to the library probably tomorrow to borrow some books (our library's collection on this guy is unbelievably small. Only 6 or less books. Not to mention those in other campus libraries) and hopefully be done by Monday cause by Monday, I need to start on my Maths assignment and of course to work on my port folio.

1st MISI Main Board Meeting

Oh, I haven't told anyone. Except my BFF. I'm now holding a presidential position in MISI club for tenure 2012. Honestly, that was out of my expectation. I was hoping to be on much lower position as I'm aware of my lacking in so many area. Now the responsibilities have rest on me as it was officiated during the Annual Grand Meeting last Saturday. Long story short, do pray hard for me, kay?

Basically, we heated off with some introductions of the main board members. 4 girls and 3 boys. 3 Human Science students i.e. Mimi, Dani and Che Mi; 1 AIKOLian - Shamy, 1 Econs, our Mr. P - Ajip, and 1 BENLian - Dilah. Representing KAEDians, me. 

70% of the time were allocated on discussion regarding the main programs that are going to be held throughout our tenure and 20% talking about our job scopes, and picking our Exco or Bureau i.e. the one that we're going to monitor. I decided on Public and Relation Bureau. Can't blame for loving social networks!

Other than that, we discussed on arising matters, and finally closed with a mini round table session, just to make sure that we're all in the same page. 

Finished around midnight, I sent Mimi to her mahallah and headed back to mine right after. It was cold along the way. It's December... What can I say. Hopefully the flood in KL nearby IJN and HKL is going to ease down a bit.

All in all, here I am... Just done listing out the things that need to be done:

1. Vernacular architecture assignment - to be submitted TOMORROW
2. Lettering assignment - to be submitted TOMORROW
3. Maths quiz on Log and Matrices - TOMORROW
4. Intro. to Built Environment assignment - to be submitted on 21st of December
5. Maths assignment - to be submitted on 22nd of December
6. Graphic Communication's Port Folio Day - early January. 
7. My very first MISI's proposal - to be done, signed by advisor and approved before 13th of January (my flight)
8. Big Bro's wedding!

Am I Serious?

A classmate asked me a question this afternoon.

"Which department are you going to next semester?" 


Before this, I would definitely say it it right out. But all of a sudden, my voice stuck and I was speechless. For a moment there, I was 100% sure that I have a second thought regarding this matter.

No, E. I told myself. This is it. After 4 wrong stations in 2 terminals, this is the one. I got the ticket in my hands right now and all this while I am almost 80% sure about the road I was about to hit. There's no way I'm backing out of this.

"I'm going to architecture, if God's willing. Of course it depends on so many factors we know but yes. That's the plan."


Right after that, I got my IBE mid term's result.

One word. Awesome!

Next, we set the date for our final exam which is going to be on 3rd of January. Maths' paper going to be on 8th.


Dear God, I need the strength to keep heading forward in my life. Give me guidances and patients so I could go through this. Amin.

GC: Assignment #14... Part I

So we arrived to the 14th assignment~ few weeks left before the port folio day... *Nervous!

Okay, first of all... after doing a little research on residences during Nara period (8th century), I decided on Fujiwara no Toyonari's mansion.

The first source I could find in our own Resource Centre is this book : 'What is Japanese Architecture: A Survey of Traditional Japanese Architecture' by Kazuo Nishi and Kazuo Hazumi, first published in 1985 by Kodansha America. I got the second edition, published in 1996 by Kodansha International.

About the book: it's a super guide for the understanding of the form and structure of traditional, historic Japanese architecture. Many diagrams of structures. Not lots of photos - but the illustrations of construction techniques, plans, sections and elevations give a different perspective than the plentiful picture books of Japanese architecture.

The challenge here is to understand the measurement used during this period which are the ken (translated to 'bay' in English), shaku, and sun. Up to this day, 1 ken is approximately to 1.818m, and every ken is equivalent to 6 shaku and 1 shaku is equivalent to 10 sun. For this very assignment, I only used up until shaku and that's it.

About this mansion, it belonged to Fujiwara no Toyonari and according to the book aforementioned above, it was thought to have five ken wide and 3 ken deep. Referring to the one after Sekino Masaru, seems to me the mansion was built symmetrically.

I also found the mansion being illustrated in D.K. Ching's book, Design Drawing. The illustration in there is clearer and closer to the real measurement.

As for the assignment, we have to do the floor plan, the elevations, and later on the axonometric plan view. I'm half way done for the floor plan (I was home throughout the previous week) so I barely started the drawing.

Any who, I'm going to gather some information on IBE's assignment before getting on with this one.

My Big Brother's Engagement Party

Song that I'm listening to right now: Marry You and Just the Way You Are (Glee Cast Version) ... 

Okay... Where do I begin? I went back last Tuesday and all the way to Friday were the days of making preparations i.e. The clothes to wear on Saturday, for me and ALL the bridesmaids, the house, the dining utensils, the FOOD, the people, and of course, the highlight of the event is the 7 trays of trousseaus... In our Bajau tradition, the groom also give stuffs to the bride, okay... 

Later I'm going to explain our tradition that we chose to follow this time that usually being implemented especially to the very first child of the family and plus my brother is also the grandson of the family, therefore it's given that we have to spend a lil bit more than the usually being spent on wedding..

But as for the engagement party, we didn't spend so much though. We had catering took care the food for Saturday morning and a cousin of mine took care the barbecue on Saturday night.

On Saturday, us, from the groom-to-be's side went to the bride-to-be's house which is located on the next village to ours...FYI, groom-to-be is NOT allowed to come during engagement party in the bride-to-be house...

Anyway, from morning to around 2 p.m. was the feast event. Mum took care like most of dad's siblings' wedding so it's given all of them came for bro's engagement. It's actually a very rare occasion to see all 8 (out of 9) of them together at family events.

Around 2, lead by our village leader, who has a fine name but unfortunately being nicknamed by abang and his friends as Deka. He was actually had to be sent to the hospital in the morning because of asthma attack but he refused to miss the event so he came with Dad anyway~ We were so touched because of that. 

These are the 7 trays of trousseaus... I made all of them myself and a cousin helped me until 3 in the morning on that Friday...

Shoes and make-ups... I had to re-wrap the small-sized box with white paper and later with a silver wrap... but still, it's worth the view...

Of course, an engagement cake... and last but not least... the Sirih Junjung, and the ring... Abang bought the ring bed and Mum made the sirih junjung... The green leaves are what we called as sirih and are eaten by some of the elders to drop their blood pressure... But it's a symbol of.. I'm not really sure exactly but it's important in our tradition in fact, it heads these trousseaus... 

... at the bride-to-be house, I literally scattered the RM15k bills around the ring... Kidding! I rolled the RM100 bills in 10 and tied a ribbon around it... 

... Presenting the bridesmaids...! We all are cousins.. This was before we head towards the bride-to-be house... 

...and of course, the best man. My lil bro, Arif right in the middle of us girls..

She is such a doll! Her 21 yrs old sis, Afizah didn't come as she's currently attending UNIMAS. Me? hehe.. I skipped 2 classes for this!

Hence, it's official, people! The majlis nikah is going to be on 20th of January, majlis berinai on 21st, and the majlis bersanding is on 22nd. Pre-wedding party on 19th - the bride-to-be's birthday and post-wedding party plus the majlis potong kek on the 23rd, also the groom-to-be's birthday... Yeah.. nice coincidences, right? 

Anyway, these are the dowries from kak ida to my brother...  9 trays...

When we're done with the serious matter, we off to the dining area and had late lunch.. but before that, I took some pictures with Kak Ida...

Got home around 4 p.m. I think, and after I sat at the couch like 5 minutes, I blacked out. I woke up around 7 p.m., and prepared some fried noodles for the barbecue plak... we also had karaoke! We finished around 1 in the morning, cleaned up, and woke up around 8 the next morning. 

So.. that's ALL about the engagement party... PHEW! that was a lot!

I flew back to KL today and arrived at exact 12 midnight at the campus! =)

Books Suggestions

I've been asking here and there... and for you guys out there who have some time to check out some books during your free time, I'm planning to post series of entries of books suggestions that I picked from lecturers, seniors, and of course forums and architectural sites.

If you guys have any ARCHITECTURAL BOOKS or magazines suggestions for me, do drop some comments, yeah!

Getting Inspired

I read about this on Tanggam.com and I would like to share with you guys out there...

The title of the post is "Mental Block? No Idea for Design?"

Point number one would be reading some magazines that has good reviews first. Not just looking at pictures. Some reviews are descriptive, some are critical. Go for critical ones as these can tell you not only what's good about a design but also WHY. They also often compare with other good or similar design.

...and of course, it goes without saying that we need to improve our vocabulary each and every day for this... If you think you can tackle heavy reading right away, you're wrong. I learned it hard way so trust me. 

Point number two is traveling. But only when you have obtained comfortable amount of vocabulary then it is wise to travel to great places. I'm talking about design language vocabulary here. We have to be able to communicate what we see and feel when we go to a site. Simply 'nice', 'cozy', and 'beautiful' aren't just good enough. We must know what exactly that makes us feel that way and why or else traveling or visiting great places might not reveal any substantial results within the time frame.

I really have to agree with the point stated above. A lecturer suggested for us to go somewhere around the city to explore local architecture but it seems that it'll go to waste if we're not sure what are we looking at... or looking for... 


As for myself, the first thing I do after I turned on the research mode button, I just started Googling and Yahoo!-ing. Then I'll holed up in the university library for hours, trying to get some books that can help me. Followed with sessions of few minutes with some seniors.... 


Okay, I guess that's all. I'll post some more later!

Mini Break

Right now I'm at home. In Sabah! :D

I know it's only one month before we gonna have the final exam but there's gonna engagement party that there's no way I can miss it! It's my brother's, that's why!

Speaking of which, I just came back from buying so many stuffs for the hantaran things. We, the groom side will be sending 7 trays of it and of course the bride side will be giving 9 trays in respond to that.... Oh! I have to fetch the groom from the airport tomorrow, too!

Tomorrow I'm gonna be busy for the decorating part and I'll be meeting with some photographers and the invitation card designer so hopefully things will be nice smooth as I don't wanna have more headaches... Plus, I still have to do some heavy research on traditional Japanese houses as for the GC assignment, and maths trigonometry is killing me, people! ugh! IBE is definitely NoT helping as there are lots of things I have to read...

Any who ! The engagement party is on Saturday and I'm gonna have to settle things for the wedding arrangements at least on Sunday... Cause on Monday I'll be flying back to KL..

GC: Assignment #13... Part II

Okay... This is after I finished the rendering part...

Basically I did all the things that the lecturer asked us to do. Even though he only asked for one elevation, I did two i.e. the south and east elevations...

When I got myself into the studio this morning, I saw every single soul in there is still on process drawings. Hence, after I presented these to my lecturer, there was some sort of misunderstanding which I cleared out ASAP (about the 60 degree roof) where the base for the front elevation is 3.9m and it peaked at 3.37m (made it to 3.4m instead)... It's just a simple trigonometry, bro! Don't get yourself mixed up~

Anyway, I got myself the latest assignment which is to study a bit about vernacular architecture i.e. the traditional houses... The awesome thing about this assignment is that I got to choose ANY traditional house from ANY country.

Fine... I'll do extra homework on Malay house... But Japanese traditional houses PLUS the Japanese garden (can't get any better) are MUST!

Alright peeps, I need to hit the SkyBus that'll take me LCCT Airport as I'm going back to KK, Sabah. My bro is getting engaged this weekend so I'm going to skip this week's classes. No worries as I already informed my IBE and Maths lecturers... Good thing I never skip class before so they know that I'm not messing around by skipping their classes...

Supposedly, as for the cross section, no need the north pointer... and that one should be in engineering drawing 'mode' not to be rendered that way~

GC: Assignment #13... Part I

Like I said in the previous post, we learned about axonometric drawing and today is the day I have to submit it to the lecturer. Even though we need to submit the drawing in fully rendered, I decided to show him my preliminary drawing that I drew on a vellum first.

This is it! A product of approximately 4 hours...

eMainaiSe Gazebo

This is the first drawing.. Just for guidelines i.e. the mainframe of the idea itself.

Some of you probably wondered just now, what is this is, right? Apparently this is a gazebo. A traditional Malay gazebo called Wakaf in Malay language.

Next step would be the rendering part... Which I'm not really sure on how to come out with a good rendering techniques... hmm~

Anyway, since there's some sort of misunderstanding regarding the roof, I decided to re-do even though the lecturer said he's fine with it. There's no way I'm gonna accept that. I'm preparing myself mentally and physically to face the KAED lecturers in near future so yes. I'm trying to push myself further than I can ever be pushed.

Anyway, in continuation to this assignment, we have to add 3 things which are the front elevation, one side elevation, and one cross section of the gazebo.

I'll update some more later on.

Stairs... Oh Stairs...

For the weekend, the reading assignment given is about stairs...

But first thing first, you should choose which country's standard you want. As for me, I chose Approved Document K as it is considered as the bible for staircase design in England and Wales.

Mathematically speaking, it's kinda easy to understand the dimensions of the stairs. It's not that much of calculations. The rest is all about adding some new vocabularies and enjoying the cool design of stairs...

Anyway, these are some of the photos that I found... I would say, these goes on the list of my future house design. =)

Education of Architecture

This is actually a title from a forum that I've been reading since early this year, it's in English mostly but of course it's Malaysian-based so... Anyway, if you guys wanna check it out, here's the link... This post dated around 2004, which is 7 years ago, so I'll just pick whatever that still relevant to this day of 2011.

Anyway, after some consideration, I would like to write some sort of summary for this very topic and try my best to relate it to my experiences studying under Architecture and Environmental Design Department of CELPAD of this university.

First thing first, under this department, we have to take 4 subjects, Graphic Communication (GC), Introduction to Built Environment (IBE), Basic Computing Skills, and Mathematics (as in Pre-Calculus with a bit of Statistics). GC is a studio subject though sadly we only entered the studio in the middle of the semester while IBE is an introduction subject where we learned some introductions of the 5 departments under the Faculty i.e. KAED itself.

In the topic, someone said that we have to treat the studio subject not on its own cause it is actually very well connected to other subjects as well hence apply what we learned from these other subjects and try to integrate the knowledge into our design.

In my case, recently we got an assignment where we're required to design our own topography, and place 3 primary solids i.e. sphere, cone, and cube on the surface and later draw the site plan, front (south) elevation, and side (west or east) elevation. We already studied a bit on topography in one of the IBE lectures and as for the placement of subjects on hills, I think it's easily can be solved by using mathematical methods. But unfortunately, some students failed to connect these knowledge because they tend to separate things in the first place.

Which leads to second point of the aforementioned someone, that certain subjects should actually be made part of the design studio.

On the degree level, yes. I totally agree with this.

She also said that in fact, it's better that they made attendance for the subjects are NOT compulsory. If you think certain subject can help you in producing your final product, come but if not, don't come. This way, the students will be much more independent.

Well, if you mean subjects, I'm not sure cause a subject in a 14 weeks-semester spans more than 10 topics, so I don't think that it's possible to not to come to any of the class. Hell, don't even need to register for the subject! BUT if we're talking about lectures, then yes. Some lectures may not helping in your design so why bother to come, right?

This actually more on the issues of whether it's relevant to come to every class i.e. signing the attendance sheet, and make sure that our absenteeism is less than 30% of the whole semester or we'll be barred from taking the final exam. Yes, people! I'm talking about the Barring System. The thing about this Barring System that seems being implemented in every faculty in our university except Engineering Faculty is, it's a good thing. Some may only see from the outside, that if you come to every class then you'll get the most (not necessarily in terms of knowledge) compare to those who skipped the class often, or if you never skip a class, you'll be the lecturer's favourite. Please! Grow up already! This isn't high school anymore!

From my experiences, how often you come to the class actually shows your commitment towards the whole subject itself. How serious you are, how bad you want to be among those who got into Architecture Department. You may as well get extra marks in the final evaluation of your grades for coming to the class more frequent than average attendance. Even if you think you don't wanna be in that awesome department in future, that's not the reason not to come cause this matter isn't merely about commitment. It's also about you, as a whole, in the eyes of your judge, in this case your lecturer. The one person that you need to be aware of, that you need to respect. Talking about respect, it is gain in mutual way. Even on this level of education. If you wanna be respected, you have to respect others as well.

Back to what she said earlier, about university students should be more independents, I'm totally agree with this. Especially after being given assignments, you naturally jump into research mode, of course after making sure that you have every single information you can get from your lecturer. It's normal for you not to know certain things, especially the basics that you should have long ago but you seems can't recall it or just never heard of it. Hence, do some research about it. Don't let yourself be in the same phase over and over again, review your progress at certain point of time. You might not realise this but sometimes your own lack of motivation to move forward is considered as selfishness and worst case scenario, hindering others as well.

All I'm saying is, we all have to remember our goal in certain matter. Progress is very important, slow progress is better than being stuck somewhere without even knowing the fact that you're stuck. This is just soft reminder, not only for you guys out there, but also for me too.

IBE Mid Term

One word. Sucks! It's upon 30% actually and the questions were comprised of 30 single choices questions and 15 marks allocated on short notes questions.

Well, it wasn't really hard actually but it's pretty much confusing. For an example, who planned 'Victoria' in 1849? Was it James Beckham? Obviously not. Or James John Buckingham? Or James Silk Buckingham? or James Titus Buckingham? The answer of course is James Silk Buckingham. Sir Titus Salt was the founder of Saltaire, a Victorian model village in United Kingdom.

Anyway, I was told by the instructor that if most of us didn't score the exam, he's gonna transfer 5% of the 30% percentage to assignments later on. THAT I can count on. :D

No... Don't

I feel like I'm stranded... Alone... With nothing.

but the worst part is, I don't know where am I to begin with. 

I was standing under the bright sun, I could feel the heat running through my veins, and my heart is burning with pain... after I saw you there. Standing. 

I wanted to scream... Out loud to you. But my voice was stuck to my throat, as if something was holding it down from the bottom of my heart. 

I wanted to run away... as fast as I can, as far as I could, but my feet was chained to the  ground, as if something was holding them down, rooted far under the earth. 

I wanted to burst into tears... Fall on my knees... and just wait there, until you come to me and tell me everything's going to be alright. But no. I can't let myself to be that weak. Not in front of you.

Again, there I was. Waiting. Waiting. For something. But even the time didn't move. All the things around me started to fade away. All the noise I heard was gone. 

All the things that matter... Defined themselves into whole new levels. 

I felt... Deep down... I tried to put it words, even an initial didn't came up. I tried to picture it in my head, but all seems dark and heavy.

GC: Assignment #12

Today is the day I submitted the orthographic drawing assignment. Unfortunately, I didn't take any picture of it for you guys to see and express whatever that comes to your minds about it... I'll update later, kay!

Anyway, since all my classmates done it wrongly, all of them have to re-do and basically I'm the only one who submitted the assignment. Phew! That was a tough one! But the thing is, they got to do it more properly as our instructor revealed some other things we need to include in the drawing i.e. north pointer, graphic scale and other things...

Therefore, while others working on their previous assignment, I got some time to work on my title block design. I already came up with the layout, I got all the elements I need to put on my drawing i.e. my name, my department, matric number, drawing number, and whatnot... Probably going to put a logo or something, so people will recognise that the drawing is mine without looking at my name... :) (Still working on the design of the logo though..)


With that, I got another free-assignment weekend!

8 Bachelor of Arts in Animation students from the Faculty of Multimedia Creativity participated in the Faber Castell - Grip Concept Counting Content.

They showcased their drawing skills by drawing characters design - caricatures, and were also given complimentary Faber Castell stationeries including their new Grip products for usage throughout the entire event.

The university lectures assisted people in art coaching sessions, on the topics: ‘Figure & Gesture Drawings’, ‘Colour Theory’, and ‘Composition Drawing’.

Well, it's gonna be few days left before the break is going to end! Ugh!

Last mid term paper on next Wednesday... IBE! I'm only half-way through the notes...

It's the day that E was born to this world...

Today, November 11th, 2011...

What so special about today's date? I don't know... other than it won't come in how many years ahead of me... Today is the only day that date 11/11/11 ...

As for me, today is a sad day. Why? Because today is someone's birthday... Someone that used to mean so much to me.

But all those feelings, all those memories are gone now... After cherishing every single moment... For the past six years, they're all gone... For good. I hope.

All those ups and downs of my life, specifically for the past six years, I'm letting them go.. Today...

Maybe, just maybe, that today also mark the day that I'm turning into someone new...

I choose to abandon most of the things that no longer define who I am, today.

Therefore, let's celebrate. This day.

No more yesterday, no more contemplating with the past... No more looking back...
Might sound cliche but this is for the best...

For the future... My future...

Sketches and Silence...

I'm on semester break right now, so other than working on my previous assignments and tasks, I'm working on my sketchbook.

It's been six weeks since we had our first Graphic Communication class so basically I need to have at least 60 sketches in my sketchbook. 

I decided to give each week a theme or something. For an example, during the first week we were working on lines and lettering therefore the first theme would be the same topic. 

For the past few days, I spent at least half an hour walking around the campus, trying to find new materials for my sketches. I think I'm going to  have like more than 20 sketches merely focusing on buildings around the campus. 

It's kinda weird to see not much of people around the campus. Well, I guess it's given since it's holiday, right?

As I want to take things simpler, that's why I just go around the campus instead of going off it. Plus, I can always come to these spots whenever I want...

Finally!

Yep! Finally the good part is here! As for today, we learned all the things about floor plans and elevations!

Since we're still on low level, the instructor just introduced us few things like the roof plan, floor plan,and side elevations. Not even cross sections. Well, not yet, he said.

Next we learned about topography by using a very simple example which is a terrain. Most of us got a little confused about the lines on the terrain and all though.

Anyways, as for the assignment, we're required to create our own topography and placed the 3 primary solids with fixed given dimensions anywhere around it. Later on, we need to draw apparently 3 things, the site plan on scale 1 to 50, the front elevation i.e. in my case from the south side, and the side elevation where I chose the east elevation. Simple, right?

I'm planning to use watercolor pencil to render the drawing this time and probably gonna use the charcoal for the shades.

Well, I guess I can say that it's not much of an assignment for more than a week break. Which means I can finally have a break! Weeeeeee~


Okay, peeps! I'm gonna get some chips from the kiosk as i'm gonna go for Supernatural (season 4 onwards) marathon starting tonight!
