Site Analysis: Informing Context-Sensitive and Sustainable Site Planning and Design

So I decided to invest a little bit more on Site Analysis book and this time, I got this book. After reading few chapters, I really find that this book is extremely helpful and of course a detailed one. So no more of those shabby-ancient style of presenting a site analysis presentation board.

Not just another visit to the bookstore!

It's July and it's reading month! So I went to Kinokuniya to get some new books and they have this awesome offer until the end of this month which is new membership will get 2 voucher of 20% of 2 fixed price books! So, ta-da!

It's been a month since I got Nikki but I still don't really know how to get my hands around it. Hence, after doing some Googling, I decided to buy this.

...and I also bought this book to help me strengthen my basics in AutoCAD 2013. Though the ones we're using in the lab is AutoCAD 2009 but I'm gonna install the new one in mum's Sony Vaio, so let's just go with this one instead. ...and this comes with a free cute Dummies small notebook.

Yeah, I'll try to get my hands on the George Omura and Rick Graham books later. But for starter, let's go with this first.

As per usual, I always check out the new Luxe Paper journal and notebooks collection and... Ta-da!!! This is Lilly's new sister, Amanda.

My best friend dragged me to the cinema before I managed to get to the second floor where most of favourite genres are located. Well, I guess I'm gonna buy some more later in August by using the remaining voucher!

But for now, I'm okay with these. :) #content

GC: Assignment #14... Part I

So we arrived to the 14th assignment~ few weeks left before the port folio day... *Nervous!

Okay, first of all... after doing a little research on residences during Nara period (8th century), I decided on Fujiwara no Toyonari's mansion.

The first source I could find in our own Resource Centre is this book : 'What is Japanese Architecture: A Survey of Traditional Japanese Architecture' by Kazuo Nishi and Kazuo Hazumi, first published in 1985 by Kodansha America. I got the second edition, published in 1996 by Kodansha International.

About the book: it's a super guide for the understanding of the form and structure of traditional, historic Japanese architecture. Many diagrams of structures. Not lots of photos - but the illustrations of construction techniques, plans, sections and elevations give a different perspective than the plentiful picture books of Japanese architecture.

The challenge here is to understand the measurement used during this period which are the ken (translated to 'bay' in English), shaku, and sun. Up to this day, 1 ken is approximately to 1.818m, and every ken is equivalent to 6 shaku and 1 shaku is equivalent to 10 sun. For this very assignment, I only used up until shaku and that's it.

About this mansion, it belonged to Fujiwara no Toyonari and according to the book aforementioned above, it was thought to have five ken wide and 3 ken deep. Referring to the one after Sekino Masaru, seems to me the mansion was built symmetrically.

I also found the mansion being illustrated in D.K. Ching's book, Design Drawing. The illustration in there is clearer and closer to the real measurement.

As for the assignment, we have to do the floor plan, the elevations, and later on the axonometric plan view. I'm half way done for the floor plan (I was home throughout the previous week) so I barely started the drawing.

Any who, I'm going to gather some information on IBE's assignment before getting on with this one.

Books Suggestions

I've been asking here and there... and for you guys out there who have some time to check out some books during your free time, I'm planning to post series of entries of books suggestions that I picked from lecturers, seniors, and of course forums and architectural sites.

If you guys have any ARCHITECTURAL BOOKS or magazines suggestions for me, do drop some comments, yeah!

Inspirations

I have 4 assignments for the weekend and I haven't done anything yet.

Still finding some inspirations and reading some materials.

As for Graphic Communications, we are required to have this book, Design Drawing by Francis D.K. Ching.

I bought the latest release of the book last week even before I started the class. What a nice coincidence, right? =)

As for Introduction to Built Environment, the required book is 1994's The Built Environment: A Creative Inquiry into Design & Planning by Tom J. Bartuska and G.L. Young but the one we have in the library is the revised edition, released in 2007 with the title of The Built Environment: A Collaborative Inquiry into Design and Planning edited by Wendy R. McClure and Tom J. Bartuska himself.

The assignments aforementioned are consist of 4 drawings, the first one is the composition of lines while the other three are from the third week topic on tones and values, rendering techniques, and shades and shadows.

As for the first assignment, I'm thinking of using pigment pens to draw those lines. Should be okay, right?

I am thinking of using my money-box as the subject for the three assignments but I know it's gonna be tricky as it has many lines and shapes on it still, I'm gonna try anyway.

Alright. I think I'm done with finalizing the things I need.

After asking few lecturers and seniors, they said that this is one of the must-read book if you're going for Architecture Department for Foundation and Degree level. This book is basically about exploring all the basics one architecture students should have i.e. the primary elements, like lines; then the form, basic forms, its transformations; Form and Space, talking about elevations, planes and openings, then the Organization of Form and Space, well I haven't yet read this part so... 

The book so far is well, awesome! With thousands of freehand drawings inside, and oh! I forgot to mention that the third edition comes with the new edition of CD-ROM that brings the book's architectural concepts to life through 3D models and animations created by Professor Ching himself. 

I think that's the not-so-much-of-a book review by me as I'm still picking up the architectural jargons from here and there (this book and that book..)...
